The Origins of Goju Ryu Karate

Goju Ryu, meaning “Hard-Soft Style,” is a traditional Okinawan karate system founded in 1930 by Chojun Miyagi Sensei. The style balances powerful, direct techniques (“Hard”) with soft, flowing movements (“Soft”), allowing practitioners to adapt effectively to different situations with strength and flexibility.

Miyagi Sensei developed Goju Ryu by combining Okinawan martial arts traditions with Chinese kung fu influences learned from his teacher, Kanryo Higaonna Sensei. Higaonna Sensei’s mastery of Southern Chinese martial arts, especially the White Crane style, introduced key principles such as strong stances, breath control, internal energy, and body conditioning — all of which remain foundational to Goju Ryu today.

Our Philosophy

Goju Ryu’s philosophy extends beyond physical training to emphasize balance in life: firmness with compassion, strength with humility, and discipline with patience. Through rigorous practice — including the fundamental Sanchin kata focused on breathing and mental focus — students build resilience, respect, and harmony of body and mind.

My Martial Arts Journey – And How It Can Shape Yours

My journey in martial arts began in September 1988. I still remember sitting beside my dad during my very first karate class—something clicked. From that moment, I knew I had found something that would shape my life. Karate wasn’t just a hobby—it became a path I was determined to follow all the way to black belt and beyond.

Throughout my journey, I’ve come to live by the principles martial arts instills—perseverance, commitment, and unshakable dedication. These values haven’t just helped me earn my belt; they’ve fueled my life. I’ve pushed my limits through multi-day treks in the Amazon jungle, crossed the game reserves of Kenya, climbed the rugged terrain of Patagonia, and completed Ironman races, marathons, and ultra-endurance events. In every challenge, it was the mindset I developed through karate that carried me forward—especially in the moments where giving up seemed easier.

These experiences have taught me that martial arts is more than just physical training. It's a way of thinking, living, and overcoming. The same grit and determination I’ve relied on is exactly what I aim to pass on to every student at The Black Belt Academy.

When I founded The Black Belt Academy in Verwood in March 2007, my vision was clear: to build more than a dojo—to create a centre of excellence. A place where students of all ages can develop confidence, discipline, leadership, and life skills that serve them far beyond the training mat.
